How to play Meowdoku

How to play Meowdoku: four rules, explained

You can learn the rules in 30 seconds. The fun is that every move has to satisfy the row, the column, the region and all eight neighbouring cells at once.

RULE 01

One cat per row and column

Once a row has its cat, every other cell in that row can be marked ✕. Same for columns. Note it is exactly one, not at most one.

RULE 02

One cat per coloured region

The board is split into as many regions as it has rows. Regions differ in size and shape, but each one gets exactly one cat.

RULE 03

Cats never touch

Including diagonally. A cat blocks all eight cells around it — and any blocked cell can never hold another cat. The diagonal rule only covers neighbouring cells, not the whole diagonal.

RULE 04

Every board has one answer

Every board here is generated on the fly and checked by our solver for a single solution. Clashing cats turn red immediately, but a cat that breaks no rule yet is not necessarily correct.

Meowdoku tips & strategy

Meowdoku tips: from spotting to deducing

Work through these in order when you get stuck. Most positions have a next move you can prove without guessing — and the Hint button will explain it.

Start with the smallest region

A region of two or three cells has very few options. If one of them is blocked by another cat, the rest is forced. This is the most reliable opening.

After every cat, do four things

Cross out its row, column, region and the eight surrounding cells. Most "stuck" moments are just one missed elimination; fix it and the chain reaction resumes.

Mark ✕ instead of memorising

Right-click or long-press to mark a cell as impossible. Once every impossible cell is marked, the remaining blanks reveal the answer by themselves.

Look for regions squeezed into two columns

If two regions can only place their cats within the same two columns, those columns are fully taken — no other region can use them. This counting argument is the key to harder boards.

A red clash does not tell you which cat is wrong

It only says the two cats conflict. Step back and recheck your earlier deductions instead of moving pieces at random. To verify a whole board, use the solver.

Meowdoku FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is Meowdoku? Is it a kind of Sudoku?

Meowdoku is a cat-themed logic puzzle built on one-star Star Battle, the same family as LinkedIn Queens. It borrows the word "doku" but has no numbers at all — "cat logic puzzle" or "cat sudoku" describes it better.

How do you play Meowdoku? Do I have to guess?

Click a cell to cycle empty → cat → ✕; right-click or long-press to mark ✕ directly. Every board is checked by a solver to have exactly one solution, and the Hint button gives you the next move with its reasoning. No guessing needed.

Are there ads, lives or in-app purchases?

No. This web version has no ads, no three-mistake limit, no purchases, no sign-up and no download. That is exactly why people search for "meowdoku without ads" or "meowdoku online".

How is Meowdoku different from Queens or Star Battle?

The rules are essentially identical: one piece per row, column and region, with no touching. Classic Star Battle usually asks for two stars per row, column and region; Meowdoku and Queens use one — here, shaped like a cat.

Can I play on my phone? Will I lose progress?

Yes. The board adapts to any screen and long-press marks ✕. Your timer, best times and streak live in your browser's local storage — no account, and nothing is uploaded.

How does the hint / solver work?

Hints first try human-style deductions such as unique candidates in a row, column or region plus neighbour elimination, and explain the reason. If the position is beyond basic deduction, the hint falls back to the verified unique solution and says so. You can also check a full board with the solver.

About this site

About this site and how the content is made

An independent little project. This is a free browser version of the cat logic puzzle. Every board, answer and reasoning note is computed by our own generator and solver: we build the regions, enumerate every legal arrangement to confirm there is exactly one solution, and only then publish. No third-party puzzle library, and no personal data collected.

Update cadence. A new daily puzzle appears at local midnight, and every past puzzle keeps a permanent link. The daily answer index is regenerated alongside the archive.
